Graduation Ceremonies
The Soma Graduation Ceremonies are a time to celebrate the success of each graduate. Graduation Ceremonies are normally held on a Sunday in the spring.
How do I check my commencement status?
If you have any questions about your eligibility for graduation (i.e. attendance, grades, financial obligations), please contact the Student Records Office at 312.878.4639.
How do I get my cap and gown?
A cap and gown is ordered for each eligible graduate. You can retrieve your cap and gown a few hours prior to the ceremony at the designated location in the commencement venue. You may keep the cap, but please be sure to return the gown immediately following the ceremony.
When will I be recognized for honors such as Valedictorian and/or Perfect Attendance and/or President’s Honors?
Valedictorian, Perfect Attendance, and President’s Honors recipients will be announced during the ceremony as you receive your diploma. Recipients of these awards will also be given a certificate with their diploma.
Are guests allowed to attend the ceremony?
Yes, guests are allowed to attend the ceremony at no additional charge. When responding to the Graduation invite email, please note how many guests will be in attendance so that Soma can prepare the venue.
Are tickets required?
No, tickets are not required for the ceremony.
Are animals allowed at the ceremony?
No, animals are not allowed at the ceremony, except for service animals.
Where do I park?
Graduates and guests can park at the location of the venue. If there is a discounted parking, graduates will be notified prior to the event.
Will refreshments be available on Commencement Day?
Light refreshments and hors d’oeuvres will be made available after the ceremony.
Where should graduating students go and when should they arrive at the commencement location?
Graduating students should follow the signs to the designated area where they can check in with Career Services, receive their cap and gown, and take their graduation photos.
What is the order and length of the ceremony?
The procession will begin promptly at 1:00 p.m. The ceremony will include speeches and the conferring of diplomas. The ceremony usually lasts approximately 1 hour.
Will there be a reception after the commencement ceremony?
Yes, light refreshments and hors d’oeuvres will be served following the commencement ceremony outside of the hall.
Will professional photos be taken? How do I get access to these pictures?
Professional photographers will take professional photos of each graduate and photos throughout the ceremony. To view graduation photos, please call the Career Services Office at 312.878.4225.
