Anne Williams, a massage therapist and director of education for the Associated Bodywork & Massage Professionals, a Golden, Colo., group, says the best way to determine which therapy is right for you is to get a referral from an orthopedic doctor, physical therapist or fitness trainer.

“It’s never going to be a one-size-fits-all recommendation,” she says. Many people view massage and bodywork as an indulgence. “It should really be viewed as a ticket to feeling the best you can,” she says. Here, Ms. Williams explains various bodywork techniques.

Massage: A therapeutic system in which a therapist manipulates the muscles, tendons, and ligaments of the body to reduce tension and pain, improve muscular balance and function, and reduce stress.
